A Primer on Manpremi
...
Examples and Resources
- Buy Nothing
Buy Nothing is a web of commuity collectives which encourages people to give goods and services away as gifts for free to one's community. The "community-building social movement" expresses clearly the ideals of Manpremi: forming and strengthening communal ties, sustaining and being sustained by one another, and doing so "as ourselves" and not as markerters or advertisers. Buy Nothing's near univeral presence makes it a powerful example of ubiquity of Manpremi as an ideal all throughout society.
- Food Not Bombs
Food Not Bombs is a volunteer movement which collects food that would otherwise be discarded by vendors and gives it directly to the hungry. This is done both to help other access their right to nourishment and to protest governmental over-spending on military budgets while the people living under it starve. Food Not Bombs is explicitly not a charity, which showcases the Manpremi concept of "lifting up" others who are suppressed so that they stand as your equals, instead of "leaning down" to those who are suppressed and not working to change their position in society. Like Buy Nothing, it is a network of local collectives which allows for great flexibility to the needs of each community.
